What is United We Go?

We are the District of Columbia, a people always on the move. Whether you walk or roll, bike or scoot, drive or metro, you have one goal: get where you’re going safely. That’s the spirit of United We Go. That’s the mission of the DC Highway Safety Office.  

Mayor Bowser has set a bold and transformative goal: zero roadway deaths in DC. Inspired by an international strategy known as Vision Zero, we know that roadway trauma is preventable, making zero the only acceptable goal. Progress may not always be linear, but with collective action and commitment, we can make our streets safer for everyone. If you're reading this, you have the power to be part of the solution and help create a future where mobility safety is a reality for all. 

So, what exactly is United We Go? And how does it tie into this goal? Simply put, United We Go is a rallying cry for one to make responsible choices on the road, resulting in a safer transportation ecosystem for all. 

Let’s break it down!  

United. We must move together. No matter how you get around the District, we need you to obey the traffic laws that make our system work. Follow the speed limit. Never drive impaired. To walkers, bikers, and movers: be predictable and seen. To my drivers, you hold the keys – literally and figuratively - to your safety and the safety of others.   

We. Think about others. In DC, we care about our neighbors, and we welcome people from across the globe to experience our city. We have a shared responsibility to play our part, each individually, so we can move as one. A little kindness goes a long way, especially on the roadways. 

Go. Go-go music is the lifeblood of DC. And just like our music, Washingtonians are always on the move, shaping our community and history at the same time. We’re proud to be DC's hometown, but we’re also home to hundreds of thousands of moms and dads, artists and engineers, students and scholars – people who come from every walk of life to do one thing – go. 

As the premier brand and campaign of the DC Highway Safety Office, United We Go brings together drivers, cyclists, passengers, pedestrians, and others to share the road. Unity doesn’t just save lives; it prevents putting them in danger in the first place. 

So, let’s get going! Grab your helmet. Buckle your seat belt. Look both ways. This movement is sweeping the District, and we’re counting on you to join us.
